WEEKEND DETAILED PROGRAM
Saturday Apr 150 - COFANO MOUNT EXCURSION
8.15 a.m. – Meeting in Palermo Piazzale Giotto/bar Oceania for departure at 8,30 a.m.
10.30 a.m. - Starting excursion Mount Cofano
A beautiful excursion in one of the most popular destinations of hiking Sicilian. The R.N.O. of Mount Cofano will give us some good emotions through its landscapes, the sea and its botanical rarities. The route is also quite simple if it begins with a moderate climb up to the saddle Mount Cofano, at m. 249 above sea level. Next we will see Baglio Cofano 258 m above sea level, and a small but beautiful pond temporary (gorgo Cofano), rich in aquatic species and frequented by small animals linked to humid environments: dragonflies, discoglossi dulciacquicoli and shellfish. Continuing the path will become easier but equally impressive, moving from the view of the gulf of Cornino to that of the Gulf of Cofano. We will face, therefore, a slight decrease on a long lawn dominated by particular aspects of mixed Mediterranean garrigue and then travel along a path that winds between cliffs populated by rare endemic plants and interesting species of terrestrial molluscs. After a short section of small road you will reach, a few steps from the sea, the abandoned but renovated building of Cofano Tonnara, used for filming several episodes of "Commissario Montalbano". For the return we follow another path, which winds on the trail along the coast, in front of one of the most beautiful cliffs in Sicily, in an environment of vegetation with nane palms and mastic, where it lacks the presence of some rare plants. At least there will be two stops in this last stretch, the first to visit the Cave of the Crucifix, inhabited since the Neolithic period, the second for the imposing Cofano tower.
5.00 p.m. Transfer to the farm, accommodation in the rooms and dinner
Length: about 8 km - Difficulty: Medium. The tour is mainly on the path from the loose surface, although in short sections can appear slippery. Vertical drop: 300 m - Duration: 5 hours
Sunday Apr 16 - EXCURSION TO ZINGARO NATURAL RESERVE
After breakfast departure to the Zingaro Nature Reserve
10.00 a.m. - Start excursion to the coastal Zingaro. The R.N.O. Zingaro extends from Scopello and San Vito Lo Capo, along a stretch of about 7 km of the beautiful rugged coastline, interrupted by small coves and bays, enclosed by massive reliefs that surround it.
The area has a variety of environments and landscapes, characterized by a rich biological diversity. In the Reserve, in fact they vegetate more than 650 plant species of great interest, of which more than 40 are endemic species and numerous are those rare, like the exclusive Limonium of Todaro. Equally interesting it is the fauna: the existence of ecological niches allows, in fact, a particularly high diversity and seen only in a few other places of the island.
On a side note it must be made for the extraordinary and absolutely pristine marine environment characterized by an intact ecosystem and particularly rich in biodiversity. Of relevance it is the "sidewalk vermetidiâ" (Trottoir to vermetus) endemism. Another element of great interest is the Uzzo Cave, on which we will stop during the walk. It is a huge cavern of marine origin on which traces of human presence have been found dating back more than 10,000 years ago.
5.00 p.m. - Return to the farmhouse and dinner
Length: about 10 km - Difficulty: medium-easy. Overall it is a simple route, entirely on the beaten path, and well-marked. The only element of difficulty could be the length Difference in height: 250 m - Duration: 6 hours
Monday Apr 17 - EXCURSION TO ERICE MOUNT
After breakfast departure to Mount Erice
10.45 a.m. - Start excursion from Erice. Shortest route to natural and historic-cultural interest ring. The route, starting from Porta Spada, down along the northern slope of Mount Erice towards the remains of Porta Castellammare, rediscovered in a 2010-2011 excavation, to achieve the three stone churches of Santa Maria Maddalena (520 m), Sant ' Ippolito (490 m) and Santa Maria Maggiore (445 m), dating back to the fourteenth century.
Along the way they are having short stretches of paved road of historic value. The route is a high panoramic views towards the plain of Valderice and Custonaci reliefs (Reserve of Mount Cofano) and San Vito Lo Capo (Monte Monaco), as well as to the Egadi Islands (Marine Protected Area). Back towards Porta Spada, through a short stretch undergrowth, you can reach the Spanish Quarter (670 m) and visit the medieval village of Erice's historic center. Free lunch and free time through the narrow streets of the medieval village
5.00 - Departure to return in Palemo
Length: 4.5 km loop - Difficulty: medium-easy. The route runs entirely on trazzere and beaten path, but affordable some strenuous climbs. Vertical drop: 350 m - Duration: about 3.5 h
